New year, new season – new you! What that means is an improved and a very-2017 wardrobe update that hits all of spring’s major trends.
Despite of common belief that Australia is behind Europe in fashion sense, I see it as a major advantage as we Australians know all the major trends (Spring’17 in this case) well ahead of Australian Spring season. This alone gives us time to plan our new-season looks, starting now.
Get our rundown below of the eight biggest trends to come out of Milan Fashion Week Spring 2017 shows.
GEOMETRIC PRINT
Geometric prints provided a fresh alternative, alongside to stripes and florals this season. From midi-dresses, hot pants to silky, marabou-trimmed pajama sets to choose from, this loud print will get you noticed.
YELLOW IS THE COLOUR
Yellow ruled the runways in Milan top to toe, from slick dresses and body hugging knits to fur coats and bags. Virtually every shade of yellow hues popped up somewhere – from lemony yellow at Ralph Lauren to egg yolk at Phillip Lim.
BIG SHOULDERS
There’s a whole lot of attention being paid to what goes on your arms these days, whether in the form of extra-long cuffs, ballooning sleeves, or sloped, super-sized shoulders. Designers Jil Sander and DSquared2 showed an array of huge, sandwich-sized shoulder pad designs, while Milan’s take on the trend was softer and more elegant than most.
STRIPES
Stripes have clearly had strong presence at the 2017 Spring catwalks. The equivalent to what a white t-shirt used to be back in the day, they truly have 9 lives. We’ve seen the trend now for 2-3 seasons and it will continue to carry forward.
Silky, stripey, and delightfully comfy-looking, many of spring’s runways took inspiration from your PJ drawer. At Fendi, Karl Lagerfeld‘s collections in all-over striped looks the vibe was beachy, inviting you to lounge around in a cabana and check out of the stress of city living in wide-leg pants and oversized shirts, while looking stunningly chic in the process.
SNEAKERS
There has been an increase in demand for sneakers as modern women are now more focused on comfort and practicality, as well as value investing in a shoe that is both stylish and comfortable enough to walk or commute in.
Sneakers continue to be extremely popular in 2017, due to their versatility and ability to effortlessly dress up an outfit, plus you can never have too many.
MULES AND BLOCK-HEELS
Mules and low block-heels are certainly taking over in 2017. Flat mules, low block-heel mules, heeled mules, sneaker mules, espadrille mules, in all fabrications and colours including velvet, satin, canvas, and embroidery, were big for 2016 and they will be even bigger for 2017. Practical and comfortable addition to any outfit, this is what we ALL have been waiting for!
LONG, NAVEL-GRAZING PENDANTS vs Chokers
2016 was the Year of the Choker. 2017 is set to be the Year of the Long Pendant
BAGS
Supersized to an exaggerated degree at Sonia Rykiel, Celine and Paul Smith, these babies will hold anything and everything. We love them!
